A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident happened on the trans-isthmus railway, a rail link constructed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this accident,” stated the national leader.
The president reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term ended the year before. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised significant concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Investigation and Halt
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party called for an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This pause was proposed until the completion of a full independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "requires immediate answers."
In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in complete accordance with all operational standards. Commitments were given that the government would be "accountable" in both the development and running of these strategic projects.
