Space Traveler Shares Mental Health Struggle Following ‘Tsunami of Online Abuse Following Journey
A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her emotional downturn after being subjected to a massive wave of online abuse in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also featured well-known figures.
The high-profile flight was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” she recounted in a online statement, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the landing.
She portrayed the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she wrote. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in gynecological science and conducted tests during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and astronaut training to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was overshadowed under the avalanche of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for sexual assault survivors.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was deferred after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a protracted legal battle.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since reaching space, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the supporters whose kindness were her lifeline. “Your support rescued me,” she wrote.
She noted that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had come out of the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.
The Historic Journey
The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in April, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the Kármán line of outer space.
The team of pioneers also included experts in different industries.
The enterprise behind the flight is a commercial aerospace company established by a Amazon founder.
