Much like Storm Claudia swept through the north-west the previous evening, City overwhelmed the visitors aside at the Etihad Stadium. It was a statement three goal win for their manager's side owing to goals from Rebecca Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Lauren Hemp. It was a result that truly announced their championship potential as they strengthened their standing at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United

This result marked successive league setbacks for Skinner's side for the initial occasion since May 2024, placing them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their trophy ambitions severely dented.

The Red Devils' capacity to juggle league and European football with a limited team has been a hotly discussed topic since they earned a place in the UCL. Reviewing the calendar, it always appeared this was the week that would truly test this fortitude. Unfortunately for the visitors, they appeared fatigued from start to finish, the memorable win against PSG clearly having taken a toll.

Team Changes

Marc Skinner had attempted to freshen things up with a handful of adjustments. Ella Toone, Elisabeth Terland, Janssen and Leah Galton all provided freshness, although the dropping of the in-form Melvine Malard to the bench was questioned.

Manchester City, in contrast, have no similar fitness issues. The City coach made one adjustment from last week’s win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a physical setback.

Overpowering Start

The storm clouds started to build for the United boss and his side from the opening minute. This was a show of the strength from Manchester City whose potent offense manipulated and tore United open with a superb first half showing that saw them put three past the keeper in 21 minutes.

This placed City firmly in control and left United all at sea. In advance of this encounter, United had let in just six in this domestic competition but they fell apart in the presence of Manchester City's offensive ingenuity.

Early Chances

The warning signs came soon when Miedema used her strength to push Zigiotti off the ball, only to drag her shot past the post. Hemp was at the core of everything early on, using the room left by Jayde Riviere down United’s right side. Her crosses were causing problems and led to an opportunity for Yui Hasegawa that Anna Sandberg cleared off the line.

The Red Devils had multiple forays forward, their direct style giving them options in the wings but they could not test Ayaka Yamashita. City, on the other hand, controlled the ball, teasing their rivals and trying to draw them out of their defensive shape.

Triple Strike

They turned chances into goals with almost thirty minutes played when Fujino won the home team a set-piece. A cross to the back post was headed across goal by Shaw for Knaak to nod home. It was Manchester City's 7th goal from a cross of the campaign.

They increased their cushion with two more goals just before the interval. When Jade Rose was permitted to drive through the midfield from central defence, the pitch became spacious for City. The key Kerstin Casparij received possession on the right side before sending a pinpoint low cross for Shaw to bundle home. Shortly later, they had a third goal after a quick turnover in possession saw Hemp given the space to drive a shot home from distance.

Second Half

The clearest change came from the United manager at the break as Malard was introduced for Terland but by this time it was futile to shift the momentum of the game. Former City player Jess Park came most likely to score, striking the upright, but the visitors were creatively abject and were unable to register a solitary shot on target.

The home side, meanwhile, could have extended their lead when a superb Miedema long ball sent Bunny Shaw away only for her to fluff her lines but it did not affect the result to the hosts. Previously unable to overcome any side who ended above them the previous campaign, the manager's side now have successes against Arsenal and Manchester United to position them in a commanding standing after the opening fixtures.
