Wimbledon Introduces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing video review technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon this year.

Players will gain the right to question particular rulings made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development follows just a year after the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine specific situations, such as:

  • If a ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
  • Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of reviews a competitor can initiate.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
